An excerpt from my unpublished novel
I hate sharing my writing. I squeeze my eyes shut when I press post on these things. I start and I stop and I try to get back into it when I remember this is my dream. The scariest part isn’t “what if I fail?” It’s this knowing that it has to happen. That it hurts deeply cause it can’t not happen. Because I’ll feel this forever until I do something about it.
So in the spirit of doing scary shit, here’s a recent thing I wrote for the book. It’s set in Muskoka. It’s about young love and confusing romance and friendship. If you hate it, don’t tell me and if you love it, you also don’t need to tell me. I hope one day you read this excerpt in a physical book that says “New York Times Bestselling Author” on it.
The way it felt when he was touching me. My entire body would heat in the area his fingertips grazed me. My forearm, my shoulder, my low back, my hand. It wasn’t long. But he led me through the crowd and I grabbed his hand. It was awkward at first until he flipped my fingers. My palm was down as he led me through the crowd. Three of his fingers, gently intertwined with mine. Loose. Like we can’t commit to this. It’s too much. But we will keep them there for a second. Just enough to send sparks up our arms.
I felt like he was taking any excuse to be beside me. Some way in contact with me. The drunker he got, the more carefree he was about it. Our eyes locked, getting closer and closer. His lips nearly brushing my ear as he tells me something over the loud base of the music.
We’re moving again, changing where we want to stand. I gently graze the side of his back. His arm and shoulder feel safe. Further down feels like a dare. A secret bet.
Never linger. But be close enough to hover. To feel the inkling of possibility. My heart is racing and my blood has never felt so awake. I never want this night to end. I want to get closer and closer to him until there’s no more distance.
